Home Automation: Is the act of automatically controlling routine electronic procedures within the home.

The largest cost saving area for automation is setback for air conditioning and heating units. The largest energy consumer in the home is usually the central air unit, when these can be controlled to run only when you need to use them they will only consume energy during those times. This will save money and make your living environment more pleasant.

The most typical times to cycle back the central units is when you are away during the day, during sleep hours, and while gone on vacation. The simplest way to control the central units is through the use of communicating thermostats. These thermostats can be wired to the home management system or the intelligent security alarm system for set back control.

The water heater is the second largest energy user in the home and can be controlled by the home management or security system. By using these systems you can cycle the water heater to come on only when you need it instead of continuously. You may also call in remotely to control the water heater.

Either of these systems has the capability to be controlled through the home network, by timer, or through an Internet gateway. In addition to feeling more comfortable, you should expect to save 20-25% on home energy usage with these systems.
